Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

The meibomian glands are located within your eyelids with openings on the lid margins behind the eyelashes. This layer helps prevent tear evaporation and keeps your eyes lubricated and comfortable. When these glands become blocked, inflamed, or stop functioning properly, it results in a condition known as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

MGD is a major contributor to evaporative dry eye, where the tears evaporate too quickly from the surface of the eye, leading to irritation, blurred vision, and chronic discomfort.

Common Symptoms of MGD
  • Burning or stinging sensation.
  • Red or irritated eyes.
  • A feeling of dryness or grittiness.
  • Blurred vision that improves with blinking.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Frequent need for eye drops.

Over time, untreated MGD can lead to more severe ocular surface damage and persistent inflammation.

Advanced MGD Treatment at Dry Eye WA

At Dry Eye WA, we use advanced diagnostic tools like the Antares Eye to assess the health of your meibomian glands and ocular surface.

Once diagnosed, we offer a suite of effective, non-invasive treatments, including:

  • Blephasteam® – A heated steam therapy that gently melts oil blockages in the glands.
  • Blephex® – A professional deep-cleaning treatment that removes biofilm and debris from the lid margins.
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy – Reduces inflammation and stimulates gland function, particularly effective for rosacea-related MGD.
  • My Mask LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy) – Stimulates tissue repair and reduces inflammation for lasting relief.
  • RexonEye Therapy – A new generation treatment that regenerates meibomian gland cells using Quantum Molecular Resonance.
  • Moisture Chamber Frames – Help retain moisture on the eye surface, providing relief between treatments.

We also stock a wide range of eye care products to support your daily routine and maintain tear film stability.
