My Mask LLLT is a red wavelength LED (Light emitting diode) light treatment which can be used either as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with IPL therapy in the treatment of evaporative dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction or inflammatory blepharitis.
Where IPL uses short, hot pulses of light to stimulate the glands and soften the meibum secretions of the meibomian glands, which protect the tears from evaporating from the surface of the eye, LLLT utilises the longer wavelengthe red LED light in photobiomodulation to stimulate the glands in a non-thermal manner on both the upper and lower eyelids. An increase in meibum production and quality protects the eye surface by reducing the tear break up time, allowing the tears to coat the eye surface for a longer period, bringing a decrease in the discomfort of dry, scratchy eyes.
Photobiomodulation acts to repair and rejuvenate damaged or compromised cells in the skin and improve cellular function. http://www.dovepress.com/combined-low-level-light-therapy-and-intense-pulsed-light-therapy-for
It is thought to be achieved by absoprption of the red light and near infra red (NIR) light by the mitochodria in the cells enhancing the enzyme activity and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) production. This brings about an increase in cell energy and increased cell respiration https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3288797/ and is used currently in the reduction of inflammation and improvement in appearance of the skin in rosacea, acne, burn healing and hypertrophic scarring and is being investigated in the treatment and healing of plaque psoriasis.
