Blepharitis

An eyelid inflammatory disease

What is blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an inflammatory disease of the eyelids affecting people of all ages, but more common in older age groups. It usually affects the eyelid margins making the eyes feel sore and gritty, and can recur regularly or become chronic. There is rarely any disturbance to vision in the early stages.

Symptoms of blepharitis:

Some, or all of these symptoms may be present:

  • Swelling and redness of the eyelids with some crusting
  • A gritty or burning sensation
  • Dryness of the eyes
  • Flaky skin on the eyelids
  • Styes (infection of the eyelash root)
  • Inward turning eyelashes
  • Eyelash loss
  • Ulceration of the eyelids

Types of blepharitis

There are different types of blepharitis:

  • Seborrhoeic blepharitis is commonly associated with dandruff and dry facial skin and is the type mostly causing the flakiness on the eyelids
  • Bacterial blepharitis is thought to be caused by the staphylococcus bacteria and can often be confused with bacterial conjunctivitis
  • Demodex blepharitis is caused by microscopic mites living around the eyelash root and can also cause the redness swelling and irritation

Treatments for blepharitis

As there are different types of blepharitis, there are different treatments. There is no real cure as all types can recur under certain conditions. But each type can be controlled by regular eyelid hygiene, according to the cause.

Warm lid massage is also beneficial which can be achieved with a heat pack applied to the eyes with gentle massage.

At Dry Eye WA, we assess the type of blepharitis and provide manual cleansing of the eyelashes and lids or Blephex treatment for longer lasting relief. We also advise on the most efficient form of cleaning regime for you.

If you have been suffering from these symptoms or have found the issue is recurring, then you need to talk to us.
